AIMS AND SCOPE

The one-day Second Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Database Management will bring together leading researchers and developers in the area of spatio-temporal databases in order to discuss state-of-the-art as well as novel research in spatio-temporal databases. In the spirit of a workshop, submission of novel ideas and positions that can spark discussion among the attendees are strongly encouraged. The workshop is intended to serve as a forum for disseminating research and experience in this rapidly growing area.

The first workshop, STDBM'99, which was held in 1999 in conjunction with VLDB'99 at Edinburgh (and supported by the Chorochronos research network), was a great success, with high quality submissions and around 70 participants. We hope this year's workshop will be even more successful.

Managing spatially and temporally referenced data is becoming increasingly important, given the continuing advances in wireless communications, ubiquitous computing technologies and the availability of real datasets to be managed. The goal of this workshop is to exchange novel research ideas and experiences with real world spatio-temporal databases.

We encourage submitting original research work in progress in all areas related to spatio-temporal database technology, as well as submissions that describe experiences and lessons learned in the development, operation, and maintenance of actual spatio-temporal databases from users in commercial communities. The goal is to have an exchange of ideas and a dialog between practitioners and researchers that will benefit both the academic and the commercial world in the development of spatio-temporal database management.

The topical areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

Data Modeling and Manipulation.

This involves defining data semantics, models, data types and query languages for different types of spatio-temporal data, including the modeling of uncertainty and imprecision.

Query Processing and Indexing.

This involves techniques for query optimization, indexing structures (and paradigms) for different types of spatio-temporal data (e.g., trajectories and moving objects) and different types of queries (e.g., spatio-temporal aggregations and joins).

System Architecture and Integration.

Issues here include the concrete realization of new techniques, i.e., building spatio-temporal extensions into, or on top of, existing OR-DBMS.

Decision Support and Analysis.

Topics here include spatio-temporal data mining and data warehousing, as well as visualization techniques.

Applications and Experimentation.

This includes experiences with real applications, including the architectural solutions, as well as proposals of new and challenging applications. Another important aspect for research in general is reproducibility and comparability of results. Hence there is a need for standardization, i.e., spatio-temporal datasets and benchmarks.

WORKSHOP FORMAT

The workshop will be organized so that there is plenty of opportunity for interaction among the participants. This will happen mainly in the form of presentations of refereed papers, followed by discussions. A plenary session will conclude the workshop. This format should provide a forum for the exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners in the area of spatio-temporal databases.

SUBMISSION

Authors are invited to submit original research contributions or experience reports in English. Submissions should include each author's full name, affiliation, complete address, telephone number, and email address. The submitted material must not be published or submitted for publication in other outlets. Submitted papers will be assigned to at least three referees and will be refereed and rated based on the following criteria:

Originality for research contributions; practical relevance for experience reports

Relevance to the workshop, i.e., the degree to which they integrate spatial and temporal aspects.

Technical quality and quality of presentation.

Potential to spark discussions among participants.

By submitting a paper the authors implicitly agree that, should it be accepted, at least one of the authors will register at the workshop and will present the paper.

Papers, in standard PDF format (non-standard fonts should be avoided or embedded in the file), must be submitted electronically at http://db.cs.ualberta.ca/stdbm04/MyReview. Submitted papers should also conform to VLDB's standard formatting and contain no more than 8 pages. (Even though the VLDB instructions page mentions 12 pages for full papers, for this workshop the limit is set at 8 pages.)

Authors must first submit an abstract and use the paper id and password provided by the MyReview system to upload (and update if necessary) their submissions.

CAMERA READY INSTRUCTIONS

The camera-ready copy of the paper is required by July 5th, 2004 (firm deadline). Please note that any delay may prevent the inclusion of your paper in the proceedings.

Camera ready papers must conform to VLDB's standard formatting and contain no more than 8 pages (the only difference from the submission format is the changed copyright note). The format of your paper must be for US "Letter" size paper (8.5 by 11 inches). Please note that A4 is not equivalent to US "Letter" size.

Papers, in standard PDF format (black and white only, non-standard fonts should be avoided or embedded in the file), must be sent to the STDBM'04 co-chairs (mn@cs.ualberta.ca, joerg@cs.ualberta.ca).

We have updated the VLDB camera-ready templates for you to include the appropriate copyright statement. Here are the latex files and a sample paper (style file with sample tex file and resulting pdf OR class file with sample tex file and resulting pdf). We highly recommend that you use latex to produce the camera ready version for the proceedings. If you want to use Microsoft Word, you must adapt the template from http://www.vldb04.org/instructions.html accordingly.

PUBLICATION

Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop and will appear in the informal (non-archival) workshop proceedings. (Authors will retain the copyright of their own papers.)

Authors of the best papers of the workshop will be invited to revise/extend their papers for a special issue of Kluwer's GeoInformatica Journal. (The invited papers will be subject to further reviewing for inclusion in the special issue.)
